The Buenos Aires-based Videobardo festival will mark its 27th year this November, and has just issued an open call in Spanish and English.
Videobardo Archive and International Videopoetry Festival, founded in 1996, has been presented in 21 countries and is the oldest active videopoetry Festival in the world. This 2023 opens its call to be part of a new edition of the Festival that will be held in November in Buenos Aires, Argentina, with itinerances to be defined.
We understand Videopoetry to be those audiovisual works in which the poetic verbal language (word, letter, speech, speech, writing, visual or sound sign) has a leading role or special transformative treatment. So that the three fields: Moving Image, Sound and Verbal Language dialogue to create a reality that is the Videopoetic Work.
Here are the terms and conditions. Note that all submissions should be subtitled in Spanish, though “subtitling may be dispensed with long as the artist and VideoBardo consider that it does not affect the understanding of the work.”
Ahead of the VideoBardo International Videopoetry Festival in November, there is a screening and conference by Marisol Bellusciin on Saturday 24th September as part of Quilmes Arts Week.

I’m not quite sure how I missed this till now (possibly because they’re based mainly on Facebook these days, and I don’t spend much time there), but Buenos Aires-based VideoBardo, currently the world’s longest-running videopoetry festival, is gearing up for 2020. You still have plenty of time to submit: the deadline is 30 August.
VideoBardo, founded in 1996, call artists to participate in the International Videopoetry Festival – VideoBardo 2020, which will be realizated throughout 2020 in different cities and venues around the world and at a CENTRAL WEEK in Buenos Aires, Argentina; on dates to be defined.

Autumn is usually a busy time for poetry-film events around the world, and I never quite manage to announce all of them, but it’s interesting to note their number and diversity even if this comes too late for some. In that category goes this past Friday’s screening of videopoetry in Mallorca, Sinestesia, with twelve films from Spain and abroad. It’s not too late, though, for anyone in Argentina this week to make plans to attend one of VideoBardo’s 20th anniversary festival screenings from the 8th to the 12th. And even those of us who can’t make it should extend our congratulations to the festival’s organizers for an extraordinarily long and successful run.
Coming up a week from Wednesday, on November 16, the winning films from this year’s ZEBRA festival will be screened in Berlin at the Zebra Poetry Gala.
The ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival Münster/Berlin celebrates its prizewinning films. Shortly after the 8th edition of the festival has been brought to a close in Münster, the winners of four competitions come to Berlin. “Kino-King” Knut Elstermann from radioeins presents the winning films and filmmakers, along with musical guests.
And finally, I’ve gotten word of one more screening of Justin Stephenson’s poetry film The Complete Works, for a total of two remaining in 2016: the first at the Niagara Artists Centre in Saint Catharines, Ontario on November 23 at 8:00 p.m., and the second in Winnipeg at the Cinemateque on December 15 at 7:00 p.m.
I should also note that although no date has been set yet for International Film Poetry Festival in Athens (sometime in December, I guess), submissions remain open through November 20.

The German website Poetryfilmkanal has continued its broad, international focus and clockwork regularity with its weekly series of short essays. On July 12, Vienna-based Art Visuals & Poetry (Film)Festival organizer Sigrun Höllrigl contributed “Meine dreifache Faszination für den Poetry Film“—”My triple fascination with the Poetry Film,” according to Google Translate. She wrote about her differing yet complementary perspectives on the genre as a film curator, as a filmmaker and as a poet.
The poet is sometimes at odds with the requirement that linguistic complexity and formal perfection in the sense of formal hermeticism make the film version of a text very difficult. Not all my lyrical texts are suitable for a cinematic presentation. The meaning of the words must be detectable in film speed. Unlike with a book, there is not a natural pause in the movie. What is needed are simple sentences that offer a meaning to the surface, or recorded speech with poetic touch. Good Poetry Film texts are compacted, reduced, and more minimal in their linguistic complexity compared to a poem. The more reduced, the better the simple text, the more space is created for the image. Repeated words or nonsense lyrics are stylistic devices that have proven their suitability. In Poetry Film autocracy of the picture is resolved by the language.
Last Sunday, it was Ram Devineni’s turn. Devineni is “a filmmaker, publisher and founder of Rattapallax films and magazine,” and his essay addressed “Poetry Film Reality,” championing a style of film focused on the poet that he refers to as a poetry-based film, which he says is an ideal form for many beginning filmmakers as well as a good fit for festival programming. I was especially struck by his conclusion:
Soon this small and vibrant genre is going to be challenged with new technological formats that are already challenging traditional fiction and documentary filmmakers. One such technology is virtual reality (VR) which allows the user to fully immerse themselves into an alternative world through a headset like Oculus VR or Google Cardboard. Some of the best VR stories challenge your senses by bending reality. While others create empathy with the subjects you encounter by allowing you to live their experiences. I think VR is ripe for remarkable collaborations between poets and VR designers for the same reasons poetry-based films were for filmmakers and poets. Currently all VR modules are short because of the lengthy time it takes to create them and the large files sizes that need to be downloaded. Virtual reality, like poetry-based films, lets the designer to interpret the poem and go deep into the metaphors. I am curious what ingenious new work will be created in the new emerging genre of ›virtual reality based poems‹? I am sure someone is working on the first one.
Today’s essay is by Javier Alejandro Robledo, organizer of the long-running Videobardo festival in Buenos Aires: “Die archaische Faszination am Poetryfilm“—”The archaic fascination of Poetry Film.” Judging again by Google Translate, Robledo began his historical overview in the Pleistocene:
The director Werner Herzog showed in an artistic way in his film Cave of Forgotten Pictures how petroglyphs came to move in the wavering light of the torches, and proto-cinematic style was formed. I imagine that these projections were accompanied by dances, music and magical-poetic recitations. The magical significance that is the fascination of such projections is the result of their own origin. The dialogue between the moving image, a poetic word, sound and body is so archaic, its origin a magical ritual — from this the fascination derived. From that archaic form until today, every new technology of audiovisual poetry has given new possibilities of expression and invented new special languages, all of which I want the term “Audiovisual” to encompass.
He too concluded with a look ahead:
Today there are about 15 festivals for poetry films and video poetry in the world. Video poetry will grow and develop. To give an example: holographic projections are a technology in full bloom and will be a new format and a new language for the Video Poetry and the Poetry Film that will fascinate you — in this case even without a screen.

I hope that my selection of these Spanish-language works for VideoBardo 2014 will demonstrate that a successful videopoem will always transcend language and cultural boundaries; these eight artists are universal artists, well-versed in the art forms that have emerged with the technological advancements of our time; as well, they all possess the profound, innate understanding of what I often refer to in this genre as poetic juxtaposition.
At its best, videopoetry frames the fragmentary nature of our contemporary lives. It does not illustrate this vision as the happy encounter of words, images and music; it does not exploit or celebrate the technology that enables it to be experienced; videopoetry, as I see it, is a form of aesthetic expression that only reveres its elements – the word, the image, the sound – when each brings to the work what the others lack. For each of these elements, I believe, are inherently incomplete before brought into juxtaposition with the other two. Once juxtaposed, these incomplete elements acquire an entirely new function – what may have originated with a well-meaning text, a seemingly unrelated image or a captivating soundtrack, is found to present a new meaning, an unanticipated revelation, a videopoem.

Javier Robledo’s 2007 performance-poem is structured in 3 parts. In the first, the poet/artist follows a magical “bulging” that is occurring along a typical cobblestone street. He discovers one perfect 6-sided cobblestone; painted on each of its 6 faces is a letter that, when held and turned by the hand of the artist reveals its new identity – the word, P-O-E-T-R-Y. Like throwing dice, the stone is thrown by the artist, picked up and examined (lovingly, I might add) then thrown again.
What comes to mind is Stéphane Mallarmé’s visual poem, “A Throw of the Dice”. Robledo is thus associating POETRY with both chance and play.
In the second part, the magical aspect of “poetry” is emphasized by reversed motion film: the stone appears to be rolling back to the hand that had thrown it. Text (the word POETRY painted and spelled out on the stone) and image (the stone rolling forward, then rolling backward) are integrated to produce a poetic experience.
In the third part, the stone is shown exhibited on a pedestal pushed back into a corner of an art gallery or a museum; it has become an object to be experienced at a distance, by a public whose presence is only implied by chattering voices heard on the soundtrack. Robledo’s comment suggests that poetry – living poetry – is exemplified by action, by chance, by play. It does not belong in a museum with other dead objects. It must be experienced in our everyday lives, in our streets, in our hands.
In Ileana Gavinoser’s Cosmos en Formacion three techniques of art-making – painting, collage and animation – are presented as a visual metaphor for the formation of the universe. What completes or fixes this work in the rectangular frame of the screen is the ingenious addition of a reverberating effect to the narration of an androgynous creator – in the “form” of two overlapping voices (male and female) – rendering this version of the creation myth as if delivered from “outer” space.
One distinction I have observed between a pure videopoem and most “poetry videos” is the presence of self-referentiality. Nowhere is this aspect better exemplified than in Alejandro Thornton’s minimally titled work, O. It opens on a locked-off shot of a moving landscape stamped at the centre with a gigantic letter O. After 12 seconds, the frame containing the image slowly begins to rotate. In its revolution about the fixed sign of the letter O, the moving landscape is reduced to a demystified representation of any image displaced from our screen. This videopoem not only performs the function of a traditional concrete poem (presenting meaning by its physical shape), it demonstrates the collaborative property of the image. Self-referentiality removes the narrative propensity of the work; the moving landscape loses its original meaning in favour of the word (in this case the letter O representing the world, or at least circularity).
It is becoming evident that one of the primary sources for the text element is a previously published/written poem. Dave Bonta’s adaptation of a Pedro Salinas poem presents what I am seeing as a critical question for the genre of videopoetry. If the poem written-for-the-page was perfect, the best words in their best order, so to speak, was the motivation to appropriate the poem based on the notion that a new platform/medium was in order to disseminate the work? Alternately, using the poetic juxtaposition of visual and sound elements, did the filmmaker discern a specific attribute or collaborative property of the poem that could be subsumed in the new, original work? I think Las oyes cómo piden realidades was a result of the latter. In this videopoem, the image of a nest of snakes provides a constrained visual metaphor for each reference to “they” “these” and “them” in Salinas’ reading: “these wild and dishevelled ones” “they beg” “they can’t go on living” “help them” etc. One lasting impression that differentiates a “pure” videopoem from any other “poetry video” is that you will always associate the text you read (or hear) with the image(s) and the soundtrack it was created with. After viewing this work, how can we not help but associate this poem by Pedro Salinas with a nest of garden snakes?
Oscar Barrio’s Vertigo opens with the sound of two blasts of a train’s whistle and the footsteps of a man walking. What follows is the rapid-fire voiced repetition of the word “abismo” (abyss) interjected with fragmented phrases, a virtual torrent of words. Juxtaposed with the fast-paced soundtrack is the silhouette of a man walking from left to right across the screen superimposed on an over-exposed color-saturated image of train cars speeding in the opposite direction. For me, this 73-second work best exemplifies the function of a videopoem – “to demonstrate the process of thought …”
If one were to search for meaning in the fragmented phrases of this veritable stream-of-consciousness, it could be found in the nutshell of Nietzsche’s Aphorism No. 146, “When you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you.”
I have written extensively of the Madrid-based graffiti artist Dier’s videopoem, All These Moments Will Be Lost. Appropriating what at least one contemporary philosopher referred to as “perhaps the most moving death soliloquy in cinematic history”, Dier makes a case for interpreting graffiti and its removal as the loss of memory among the disenfranchised in the world. It is also a case for an indirect form of narrative storytelling, juxtaposing images of the real world with the sorrow expressed in fiction; in this videopoem, Dier suggests that truth and fiction are not only equal in their strangeness but also partners in the struggle for change.
Between 1930 and 1933, the Surrealists published 6 issues of the periodical “Surrealism in the Service of the Revolution”, marking a significant transformation of the movement that began with the introduction of the irrational to the art practices of writing, painting, sculpture, performance and film. Political and social activism became the focus of many artists who shared the movement’s methodology as well as its expanded ideology. Asucena Losana is no stranger to political and social activism. Appropriating Bolivian poet Oscar Alfaro’s famous poem-fable, The Revolutionary Bird, for its soundtrack, this videopoem illuminates the poem’s allegorical meaning in a singular image of a homeless man sitting against the wall of his sidewalk, surrounded by his belongings stuffed in plastic and burlap bags, the focalized subject whose animated loco gestures appear to blend with and inevitably articulate the impassioned reading of the poem. Associating the gesticulations with the voice on the soundtrack exemplifies Andre Breton’s statement, that “Bringing together two things into a previously untried juxtaposition is the surest way of developing new vision.”
To conclude this program of 8 Spanish videopoets, I selected el eterno retorno from the prolific Lola Lopez-Cozar. Breton’s “new vision” is here exemplified by the juxtaposition of a slow relentless ascent of words with a dark score of orchestral and choral music. Simultaneously, we witness as rain falls, its hundreds of hard-hitting drops mimicking the punctuated end of each sentence that is moving in the opposite direction. Each line of text presents a new attempt to name the unnamable meaning of time and loss. It is a relentless list of attempts, punctuating the end of every attempt with a period. The repeated refrains of the choir invoke an epic moment – the return of the king in a classical fairy tale – but the orchestral treatment also speaks to another return, the cyclical myth-concept of the “eternal return”; this title, the subject of the work, is viewed through the doubled image of hard rain falling, text rising with the rhythm of the chant – all enveloped in the viewfinder of a video camera, flashing its record button to remind us that, after all, this is a work limited by its own time, the time it takes to experience a videopoem.
The call for artists to participate in the International Film Poetry Festival in Athens is apparently still open. The exact date for the festival in December has not been set.

A huge thanks to the new German-language website Poetryfilmkanal (Poetryfilmchannel) for helping me remember all these festivals. The site doesn’t officially launch until February, but it already includes some very useful features: the calendar, which I drew on for this post; a timeline of landmark films in poetry-film history, with links to YouTube; and a bibliography of selected books and journal articles. The Google translation of their About page makes the project sound very promising indeed.
And speaking of great resources, the ZEBRA folks have been going all-out this week to improve online exposure to films that have been screened at their festivals, creating a new ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival channel on Vimeo, as well as a Vimeo album and a YouTube playlist for just the films from the 2014 festival. These are as yet limited to films uploaded by the creators themselves, but in time I hope that ZEBRA will be able to upload their own copies of films they’ve screened, as well, providing not only a much more complete picture, but also a more stable, long-term archive of international poetry film.
VideoBardo 2014, A.K.A. V Festival Internacional de Videopoesía/V International Videopoetry Festival has its own website, separate from the parent site at videopoesia.com (and the Blogspot site for the last festival). Included are bios of the guest presenters and program schedules. Like the recent Liberated Words festival in the U.K. (with which VideoBardo is a partner), the festival will take place at several different locations and dates: November 5-9 and 28 at various locations in Buenos Aires, and December 11-13 at the Museum of Modern Art in Mendoza, Argentina. They also have a page on Facebook (though I would caution non-Spanish speakers not to rely on the machine translations offered up by Bing on Facebook. Google Translate is much better). September and October are the best months for seeing poetry films on the big screen, from the UK to Germany, Argentina, Canada, and Ireland.
The third annual Liberated Words poetry film festival, scheduled for September 13th, 19th and 20th in Bristol, sounds very interesting indeed. The program is described in detail on the front page of their website, which I like — no hunting about. I’m especially impressed by the number of exchanges they’ve initiated with other poetry film festivals from around the world. On the 19th,
Sarah Tremlett, poetry filmmaker and theorist has curated a screening looking at different poetry films forms, including films not only from VideoBardo in Buenos Aires and Visible Verse in Vancouver, but exciting new collaborators Zebra, Oslo and Tarp, Lithuania, Poetry Film Festivals. In conjunction she is hosting a discussion on ‘What exactly are poetry films?’ with: Gabrielė Labanauskaitė, Adele Myers, Martin Sexton, Penny Florence, Marc Neys and Lucy English.
On the following day, one can take a day-long masterclass in poetry filmmaking with Marc Neys, A.K.A. Swoon. And the events the week before, on the 13th, reflect some highly imaginative programming as well. The day’s theme is Memory:
Showcasing Memory competition finalists, commemorating the anniversary of the 1914-18 war, and entries based on Ivor Gurney’s poem The High Hills Have a Bitterness. A very warm welcome to returning best music judges from L.A. –Rich Ferguson (mesmerising spoken word with music poet) and Mark Wilkinson (top music video and feature director), and judges for best editing –last year’s brilliant finalists and this year’s workshop leaders poet Helen Moore and filmmaker Howard Vause. See the premiere of Marc Tiley’s edited version of the extraordinary poem Dart by poet Alice Oswald; workshopped films: the groundbreaking Golden Bird Project made in conjunction with older patients from The Royal United Hospital, Bath, and Art at the Heart, with resident artist Edwina Bridgeman and art from young patients and musician in residence Frankie Simpkins; three stunning films from years 7–10 at St Gregory’s Catholic College based on the arresting poem Mametz Wood by award-winning poet Owen Sheers; and two thought-provoking films from St Brendan’s Sixth Form College, Bristol.
In other news, the aforementioned VideoBardo festival is set for September 8 in Buenos Aires, and Berlin’s ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival will take place on October 16-19, overlapping with Visible Verse — Vancouver, October 18 — and Ó Bhéal/IndieCork on October 12-19. And incidentally, the film competition for Ó Bhéal is still open until the end of September — click the preceding link for details.
ReVersed Poetry Film Festival, scheduled for April 4-6 in Amsterdam, is the newest videopoetry festival on the international scene. They’re operating on a somewhat accelerated schedule, so interested filmmakers should not delay in submitting work — the deadline is March 24. Let me paste in some of the text from their call for entries.
Re-Versed Poetry Film Festival is launching its first edition, inviting artists, poets and filmmakers to explore the intersection between poetry and film. With its scope encompassing screenings, performances and talks, Re-versed is the first festival in the Netherlands to focus on the poetry film genre. Co-hosted by Perdu, Kriterion and OT301, it seeks both to illuminate the growing field of poetry film as well as to broaden it by providing an opportunity for filmmakers to participate in an open call for submissions.
What is a Poetry Film?
A filmic equivalent of poetry, poetry film is distinct from a poetic film in its aesthetic: it incorporates text, whether written or spoken, within its frames – a poem taking shape on screen. We invite you to explore the emerging field of poetry filmmaking: although most notably outlined by Tom Konyves’ manifesto and Alastair Cook’s Filmpoem project, it remains an open-ended area, an opportunity for experimentation. The works carried out in most innovative and creative ways will be screened and awarded at the festival. A jury will select the prize-winning films.Entry guidelines:
• All entries must be submitted by March 24, 2014.
• All entries must conform to the poetry film aesthetic: text, spoken, written or animated must be incorporated.

The brochure for the second Liberated Words Poetry Film Festival (also available as a PDF download) is worth reading even if (like me) you can’t attend the festival this week in Bristol. At 67 pages, with a paragraph or two about every film to be screened, it’s way more than a brochure; it’s a book! And given the dearth of good written material on multimedia poetry, it should prove to be a very useful document going forward, a kind of snapshot of the current state of videopoetry, filmpoetry and related genres as practiced by a diverse assemblage of filmmakers from around the world, including generous selections from the Visible Verse and Videobardo poetry festivals.
