Hamlet’s “What a piece of work is man” soliloquy by William Shakespeare

London-based videopoet Mikey Delgado just surfaced after a three-year hiatus with this remix of war footage with a recitation from Hamlet, Act II, Scene 2, all of it uncredited in the best samizdat style, and it’s perfectly, horribly on-point. I’ve lost my mirth, too…

I have of late, but
wherefore I know not, lost all my mirth, forgone all
custom of exercises, and, indeed, it goes so heavily
with my disposition that this goodly frame, the
Earth, seems to me a sterile promontory; this most
excellent canopy, the air, look you, this brave o’erhanging
firmament, this majestical roof, fretted
with golden fire—why, it appeareth nothing to me
but a foul and pestilent congregation of vapors.

What a piece of work is a man, how noble in
reason, how infinite in faculties, in form and moving
how express and admirable; in action how like
an angel, in apprehension how like a god: the
beauty of the world, the paragon of animals—and
yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust? Man
delights not me, no, nor women neither, though by
your smiling you seem to say so.

A confession at line 16 by Mikey Delgado

I had already decided to feature author-made videopoems this week when this one from Mikey Delgado appeared in my Vimeo feed. Delgado is a North London poet and blogger; this is his first new post on Vimeo in three years. Here’s the description:

a film by Foy Migado (Mikey Delgado) featuring a text and reading from Mikey and the music of the inestimable my hot air balloon (soundcloud.com/welcometotheamericas) in a roundtable at The Ephraim Cockle Centre for Poesy, discussing via an entertainment the manifest and the latent; the impulse for, and the evolution of, a text and its will to exist; response to horror, retreat from horror, pseudo conversion into art, exculpatory codas, metaphors for the poet’s will to register an experience; texts as arrows with no targets; poets standing naked in the woods.

Driver, out by Mikey Fatboy Delgado

In a new twist on the poetry-film trope of footage shot from a moving train, Mikey Fatboy Delgado riffs on public address-system announcements and has a driver on the London Underground waxing philosophical.
