Call for submissions: 5th Ó Bhéal International Poetry-Film Competition

The Cork, Ireland-based Ó Bhéal reading series have just announced on Facebook that

Submissions are now open for the 5th Ó Bhéal International Poetry-Film Competition, in association with the IndieCork Film Festival AND we are thrilled to announce that esteemed Cork filmmaker Shaun O Connor will take part as one of this year’s judges (the other being a poet, TBC v soon!). The deadline for submissions is August 31, and the screening will be during the IndieCork festival (October 8-15). Past winners have hailed from Australia, the U.S., the Netherlands and Portugal. Check it out.

Ó Bhéal director Paul Casey interviewed in Poetry Film Live

Poetry has been choking, gasping, and drowning because of the seventh art. Because of filmmaking.

The last hundred years of filmmaking has turned the world into visually oriented consumers who don’t read books anymore, or mull words over in their head, or allow their imaginations time to have some fun and think and be creative. Poetry films are opening that up to poetry again. It is going to draw a lot more people back to it; it’s going to make people aware of the intrinsic value of poetry. Poetry has rich kernels of immense potential that people are completely unaware of. I think that poetry films are going to do a lot with regards to that.

People are going to realise that because of the flexibility of the filmmaking aspect of it, they can now create completely new animals. People don’t realise it is a unique art form in itself. The fusion creates something else entirely. When that is realised it will become a lot more popular.

That’s Paul Casey, founder and director of the weekly Ó Bhéal poetry reading series in Cork, Ireland that also sponsors an annual, international poetry film competition (which will open for submissions again on May 1). Last month, the shortlisted films from Ó Bhéal’s 2016 competion were screened as part of the Belfast Film Festival, and Helen and Chaucer from Poetry Film Live were there to take in the films and interview Paul. The result is worth reading in full. As a highly multilingual poet and a professional filmmaker, Casey’s perspectives on poetry film are extremely valuable. I like that he’s integrated poetry film screenings into the weekly readings, rather than reserving them for special occasions, I like his advice for poets at the end of the interview, and I love his answer to the question “What is a ‘good poetry film’?”

We are looking for the right balance. When you put the two art forms together there is the third thing that happens; you know when it has been achieved. It is difficult to describe.

Certainly what is true for filmmaking is true for poetry film. The first truth for filmmaking is that your foundation is the script. If that is a cracked foundation then the whole building will crumble. So the poem has to have integrity, it has to stand alone, it has to stand up for itself outside the film.

It is possible for a filmmaker to create visual art and for a poet to then interpret it in words, and then to create a poetry film in that way. But the most common place to start is with the poem first.

A lot of effort has been put into the poem. The filmmaker’s responsibility is to have the right kind of respect for the poem and to create a new way into the poem. The original poem ends up becoming more valuable because of the poetry film. You are creating a new dimension, a new way in, a new life for it.

The filmmaker does not usually have a lot of poetic insight. Their insight is in the poetry of the visual, so the collaboration becomes extremely important. If the poet and film maker aren’t the same person then the process of translation from poem to visual interpretation needs to be a collaborative one, so that the filmmaker truly takes on board what is happening in the poem and embodies, or at least has a good understanding of its mechanics. There are a lot of lazy filmmakers.

Doublebunny Press Opens Submissions for Fourth Rabbit Heart Poetry Film Festival

Submissions have opened for the fourth Rabbit Heart Poetry Film Festival.

The Rabbit Heart Poetry Film Festival is a competition meant to highlight poetry and visual art at the intersection of film. The festival, due to take place in Worcester, Massachusetts in October of 2017, focuses on short films that illustrate original poems, all of which are non-performance based (read: no footage of the poems being performed).

As well as a $200 prize for Best Overall Production, Rabbit Heart will be awarding $100 prizes in six other categories: Best Animated, Best Music/Sound, Best Smartphone Production, Best Under 1 Minute, Best Valentine, and the Shoots! youth prize. The matinee, and then the gala awards ceremony and viewing party will be at Nick’s Bar in Worcester, MA on October 21st.

Doublebunny Press is a small independent press that serves the New England area through poetry design, layout, and production of fine books and posters. Doublebunny also supported Omnivore Magazine, a poetry and arts monthly which, during its three-year run, published poetry and articles by over 150 authors, and carried a national subscription base.

Doublebunny has  a history of great spoken word events in Worcester. They combined forces with The Worcester Poets’ Asylum to present V Day to the city in 2002 and 2003, and the Individual World Poetry Slam in 2005. In 2014, Doublebunny brought the inaugural Rabbit Heart Poetry Film Festival to the city, and now for the fourth year’s festival, they plan an even more exciting show for Worcester, inviting the imagination of poets and filmmakers to once again take center stage.

About Rabbit Heart Poetry Film Festival

Rabbit Heart Poetry Film Festival is one of very few outlets in the US for poetry on film, and the only festival that asks that the author of the poem participate in the making of the production. In 2014, 2015, and 2016 Rabbit Heart attracted international attention, including not only European submissions, but the honor of a showcase in the CYCLOP festival in Ukraine (2014) and showings in Barcelona, Spain at pro.l.e (2015, 2016).

This year, Rabbit Heart Poetry Film Festival has once again been recognized with a grant from the Worcester Arts Council, an agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

The organizer, Adam Steiner, tells me that they aim to go on tour with the films in the near future. To repeat what I said when I shared the initial film in the series, The Dreamer of Samuel Vale House by Steiner and poet Antony Owen, this sounds like a truly commendable use of film to bring the perspectives of poets and artists to bear on pressing local issues. And there are few issues more pressing than our fraught relationship with place. I’d love to see this project imitated elsewhere.

Call for videopoems: SINESTESIA 2017

For the third year in a row, SINESTESIA is mounting an international exhibition of videopoems during Barcelona’s Poetry Week in June. The call is in Spanish (here’s the Google Translate version), but submissions are welcome in English, Spanish or Catalan, or with subtitles in one of those languages. With all the emphasis on conventional filmmaking in so many poetry film festivals, it’s refreshing to see Tom Konyves’ manifesto quoted in a call for work.

Speaking of poetry film festivals generally, I’ve just attempted a long-overdue update of Moving Poems’ list of active festivals. I say “attempted,” because it often isn’t clear if a festival has simply taken a year off or has run its course. If they’ve gone two years or more with no update, I assume it’s time to start talking about them in the past tense. In cases where the website has disappeared, but it’s only been a year since the last festival, I’ll leave the listing up. At any rate, please let me know if there are other festivals or regular screening events I should include.

Weimar Poetry Film Award’s new trailer raises the bar for poetry film festival trailers

Look, I like the typical jazzy, brief trailers that festivals like to turn out, but this short film, directed by Guido Naschert, really makes me want to drop everything and go to Weimar in May. More than that, it’s a great introduction to the genre as a whole, as well as to some of its leading thinkers and practitioners:

Call for entries: Weimar Poetry Film Award 2017

Bauhaus University’s 19th annual Backup_festival will include an international poetry film competition for the second year in a row: the Weimar Poetry Film Award. The screening will be on the second day—May 18—of the five-day film festival, and the deadline for submissions is March 15.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Through the new Film Prize, backup_festival and Literarische Gesellschaft Thüringen e.V. (LGT) are looking for innovative poetry films. Filmmakers from any nation and of any age are welcome to participate with up to three short films of up to 8:00 mins, which should explore the relation between film and written poetry in an innovative, straightforward way. Films that are produced before 2014 will not be considered. From all submitted films selected for the festival competition three Jury members will choose the winner of the main prize (1000 €). Moreover, an audience award of 250 € will be awarded.

The competition »Weimar Poetry Film Prize« is financed by Kulturstiftung des Freistaats Thüringen, Thüringer Staatskanzlei and the City of Weimar.

Entry deadline: March 15th, 2017.

Call for submissions: Rendez-vous vidéo-poésie du Festival de la poésie de Montréal 2017

I missed it last year (in part because I’m completely out of the loop with the Francophone videopoetry scene), but for the second year in a row, the Montreal Poetry Festival will include a videopoetry competition. Entries must have been made in 2016 or 2017, and either be the work of a Quebec artist or include extracts from Quebec poems. The deadline is March 6.

Video-poetry Rendez-vous will take place in the programming of the upcoming Montreal Poetry Festival, which runs from May 29 to June 4, 2017.

10 videopoemes will be selected to be screened at an evening at the Festival.

A jury of active members of the poetic and video community will present a prize of $ 500 to the winner of the competition.

Thus Google Translate. Here’s the whole call in French. It’s not clear whether videopoems in the other languages of Quebec, such as English or Cree–Montagnais–Naskapi, would be considered.

Call for Entries: Juteback Poetry Film Festival 2017

The late, lamented Body Electric Poetry Film Festival is back with a new name! The Juteback Poetry Film Festival will take place on May 20th at the Lyric Cinema Cafe in Fort Collins, Colorado. Festival director R.W. Perkins will collaborate with Matt Mullins to program the festival. They note:

At the Juteback Poetry Film Festival we are looking for innovative and technically sound filmmaking, coupled with a strong grasp of poetics. It is our hope to showcase a wide range of talented film-poets from around the world to best represent the budding art form of videopoetry.

“Look & See: A Portrait of Wendell Berry” opens with four-minute filmpoem

A powerful, prophetic poem by Wendell Berry opens the film Look & See (previously titled The Seer, but changed at Berry’s request) by Laura Dunn and Jef Sewell, which is playing at the Sundance Film Festival as part of The New Climate program. Here’s the description on the Sundance Institute website:

Director Laura Dunn returns to the Festival with this fitting follow-up to her acclaimed documentary, The Unforeseen (2007 Sundance Film Festival). Her latest film, Look and See: A Portrait of Wendell Berry, premiered at the SXSW Film Festival, where it received a Special Jury Award for visual design.

This gorgeously realized look at the decline of modern U.S. agrarian culture is highlighted through the writings and reflections of author Wendell Berry, who embedded himself in rural life upon returning home to Kentucky in 1965. Writing from a long wooden desk overlooking the landscape, Berry used that vantage point to eloquently praise the benefits of a life deeply connected to the land. Since then, society has shifted dramatically, with mass development of rural areas and corporate farming practices replacing the roles of small family farms.

In this visually stunning ode to a changing cultural landscape, rare photographs blend with farmers and family members expressing their own stories. Using original wood engravings to frame chapters, Look And See explores the graceful intersection between art, life, and the natural world.

The Art of Poetry Film with Cheryl Gross: Brent Green and Sam Green

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of seeing Brent Green and Sam Green: Live Cinema at BAM’s (Brooklyn Academy Of Music‘s) Next Wave Festival.

I love alternative multimedia theater, especially when it includes animation. What was so special about this show was the fact that it’s not just the entertainment, it’s the whole experience. From the moment you walk into the theater and wait to be seated, the show begins. Seating is on a first-come basis and a good portion of it consists of old furniture. I had the pleasure of sharing a couch with the person I came with. A cash bar was available and everyone was encouraged to take advantage before and during the performance.

The show was billed as “live cinema.” I had never heard of Sam or Brent Green before this. As it turns out they are cousins and well known in the art world. Their credits include Sundance, Whitney Biennial and MOMA.

Sam is a filmmaker specializing in documentaries. What makes his work special is the fact that he chooses topics that are not necessarily what one would expect. The World’s Largest Shopping Mall, The Oldest Person in The World and a pet cemetery in Ohio (I believe the pet cemetery is a work in progress) are three examples. Although the theme may seem a little dark, there was nothing depressing about it. They were done with love and humor.

Brent on the other hand is the poet, musician and self-taught animator. A master of slam poetry, he too is considered a documentarian by Sundance.

Much of Brent’s storytelling is observational and unusual. His narrative is without judgment and reservation (OK, some judgment, but no reservation). He’s just reporting the facts and like Sam uses humor, which adds to the quirkiness to the show. Both artists set their stories to Brent’s animation and music. He reminds me of an older Bob Dylan, raw and fresh. In my opinion he is the quintessential Outsider artist.

I would say that if were to consider any of this video poetry, Brent would win hands-down. His animations are rough, exquisite and captivating. Hearing him recite his poetry live as opposed to on YouTube makes a huge difference. His ability to slam the story actually gave me chills.

It’s good to know that there are those out there who embrace subterranean lifestyles and spin them into art. If you can catch the performance at some point I highly recommend it.

48-hour filmpoem challenge nets 13 entries

Two weeks ago we told you about the 48-hour filmpoem challenge in Glasgow scheduled for this weekend. I must admit, I was skeptical about how many teams would compete, but according to CinePoems’ Twitter feed, no less than 13 teams entered the competition:

Congratulations to all involved. I hope some of the films will make it online so I can share them on Moving Poems. But more importantly, I hope this exercise has made converts out of some more poets and filmmakers! We’ll have to see what further news emerges about this, but it already sounds like a model worth trying to replicate elsewhere.
