something I remember by Robert Lax

Poet: | Nationality: | Filmmaker:

The third in a trilogy of animations for Robert Lax poems by the German architect and artist Susanne Wiegner.

“something I remember” is a poem by Robert Lax that describes a certain moment outside of time and space during a rainy night. For the film the letters of the poem are divided in a large amount of layers. These layers become spaces, streets and the falling rain.
And at the end … “there is nothing particular about it to recall.”

This gets the poem. I wasn’t familiar with this poem. I wasn’t familiar with Lax’s physical voice, either. What a treat this poem and video are. I’m heading back in for a few more viewings.

The “nothing particular” is the essence of Lax.

You’re quite welcome, Susanne! Do you happen to know the name of a print volume in English containing this poem? I know Lax caught on more in Europe than in his native America, and that he consequently published more in Europe than he did in America after he moved to Greece. I found 21 Pages in German only.

Yes, I know, Robert Lax is very popular in Germany, especially in Munich because of Sigrid Hauff his biographer who works and lives near Munich and because of the great film project “Three Windows” by Humbert & Penzel.

The poem “something I remember” is from the wonderful book “a line in three circles – the inner biography of robert lax” by Sigrid Hauff published at “belleville Verlag / Munich” in 1999 ( ISBN 3-933510-24-4) and the book is in German AND English! So maybe you’ll find it in the USA, too.

Thank you so much! I found the book on Amazon, and I look forward to reading it. I enjoyed Merton & Friends, a joint biography of Merton, Lax, and Edward Rice. I haven’t found a bio on Lax alone until now.

Susanne, I love what you’ve done with Robert Lax’s poems in these animations and it’s a blessing to hear his lovely voice. I wanted to let you know that my biography of Lax in English, Pure Act: The Uncommon Life of Robert Lax, has just been published by Fordham University Press. It’s available at Amazon. I’m hoping that someday it will be translated into German too. Thank you for your work, Michael N. McGregor

Just read a review of ‘Pure Act’ in the TLS and then a drift on the web with his name, came across the animation. Thanks – a journey unfolds.

    Susan,
Your vision and it’s sharing is a wonderful contribution. You add a dimension yet keep his economy of style.
    Very well done.
